The Cleaner is yet to show much through three competitive starts for Peter Gelagotis, but interestingly remains a $4.60 favourite in 2016 Cranbourne Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Tom Melbourne ($4.80) and Melbourne Cup hero Prince Of Penzance ($6.50).

Will The Cleaner justify favouritism and return to winning form in the Cranbourne Cup 2016, or will one of his rivals post an upset?

Tom Melbourne ($4.80)

Tom Melbourne has produced his best form to date in country cups races, and the Cranbourne Cup 2016 figures as an ideal platform for the five-year-old to return to winning form. Resuming this time for second in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) on August 27th, the Dylan Thomas gelding has since finished sixth in each of the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m). Craig Newitt will partner Tom Melbourne in the Cranbourne Cup, who should receive a great run in transit from barrier 7 with only 54kgs in tow.

Tarquin ($8)

Godolphin runner Tarquin carries competitive form into the Cranbourne Cup and is another who should receive a great trail into the race from barrier 8. A stakes winner, Tarquin returned to racing for seventh in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1400m) on August 27th but stripped far-fitter for the run. Completely luckless in the Gold Nugget (1700m) at Caulfield second-up on September 17th, the Hard Spun gelding sustained to the line for third in the JRA Cup last Friday, and should relish a second run at the distance in the 2016 Cranbourne Cup on Sunday.

The Cleaner ($4.60)

The Cleaner is not the horse that he once was, but his ability should warrant a first three finish in a race like the Cranbourne Cup. A multiple stakes winner through recent seasons, The Cleaner won a Cranbourne trial by close to seven lengths on July 18th but failed to translate that form to the track when eleventh in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 13th. The Savoire Vivre gelding has since finished fifth in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and sixth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m), but should have no problem finding the lead early in the Cranbourne Cup from barrier 3.
